Latrines

Our newest project brings us full circle in ensuring Clean and Healthy Villages. We have built 300 Latrines since January 2014. Family compounds using safe drinking water from a water well, filtered through a ceramic filter are on the right path to better living conditions and health. Yet the lack of latrines and practice of open defecation in the villages negatively impacts the quality of water with unhealthy levels of E Coli.

We have now built latrines in all 10 of our villages in Ampil Commune. Our survey has shown that out of 831 families only 230 have latrines, which means 67% of the people have nowhere to go but the bushes in back of their house.

A latrine costs $250 and it includes all that is needed for a successful long term project. We are using high quality underground with 3 concrete rings atop each other, a ceramic Asian style bowl and an outhouse structure made of bamboo and palm leafs. The program includes educational hygiene workshops, soap and Tippy Tap for washing hands after using the latrine and provision for repairs and pumping the tanks after they are full.

In true partnership each family has a financial commitment of $25 in order to have ownership of the latrine and take good care of it. Each family contributes labor to build the outhouse structure and some even make an improvement by adding a concrete tub or lights.
